Welcome to the Parent University! 
 

A partnership with twenty-two community based organizations, six individuals and eleven Washoe County School District Departments has produced the WCSD Parent University. After a year-long planning effort, one of our District’s promises in the strategic plan is now a reality for our community. You will find more than 200 classes offered that will help every family increase their knowledge of how to help their children succeed.

Classes are offered under the following five categories:

Supporting Learning and Navigating the System – Classes in this category will help families to support learning at home, and help parents to understand the educational system better and how to navigate policies and programs for their children.

Leadership & Advocacy – Every family has the right to speak up for their child and make sure that they receive a quality education. Classes in this category will help parents who are not familiar in how to advocate or want to take a leadership role in advocating for all children.

Parenting – Families have many questions about the best way to raise children. Parenting classes in this category will offer tips and suggestions for the many questions you might have, whether it’s how to talk to your teenager about bullying, how to keep your children safe on the internet; or how to reward your 8 year old for his or her good behavior.

Family Health & Wellness – Keeping your family healthy both mentally and physically is critical to helping your children succeed academically. Classes in this category will help you shop for nutritional food; cope with family stress; and support your athlete’s nutritional needs, amongst other things.

Parent’s Personal Growth & Development – When children see their parents taking classes and becoming a lifelong learner, they do the same. It’s never too late to get your GED, learn English, take a basic computer class or learn how to better manage your money. 

Attention The Washoe County School District is accepting applications for NEW Parent University classes for the 2012-2013 school year. Download the application form here which must be returned with supporting documents by March 23rd at 5 p.m. to the WCSD Family-School Partnerships Department. Applications received after this deadline will be considered for the 2013-2014 school year. A committee of the WCSD Parent Involvement Council will review all new applications and notify interested individuals and organizations by April 1st.
